Anxiety is commonly described as the ‘fight or flight’ response and is a biological mechanism designed to ensure the survival of the species.
It is present in all mammals. However, when the anxiety response is triggered in the absence of a threat or occurs in response to the anticipation of a yet to occur threat, then it is unhelpful. Over time, severe anxiety can lead to inability to carry out the activities of daily life (e.g., driving, shopping).
Seeking professional help and treatment can help individuals learn to cope with anxiety and resume their daily life. As with depression, there is a significant body of research supporting the use of CBT in treatment of anxiety.
